Diabetes Mellitus is rapidly emerging as a major public health problem. Although it is a chronic debilitating disease, early detection and effective management can significantly improve quality of life. Some of the important contributors to the rising prevalence of the disease are for example the effects of urbanisation and the obesity epidemic. Public and professional awareness of the risk factors for and the symptoms of diabetes are an important step towards its prevention and control. The importance of this problem has been acknowledged by the Department of Health with the introduction of a national programme for control and management of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Healthcare professionals therefore need the skills to effectively manage the disease. The course will also create a further opportunity for healthcare professionals to differentiate their practice and to respond to a growing consumer demand.
